Hey Grandma. How are you doing? It’s been a long time since we last spoke. I know. I know. I need to do better. Well, I won’t fib, it’s been kinda hard since you left. I had a hard time dealing with you being gone, but I had to be strong for Ma and my brothers and sisters. I promise that I’ll call you more from here on out.

Since it’s been so long, lemme catch you up on what’s been going on with us. Ma and Pop’s are doing well. Yup, their marriage seems to be stronger than ever. They both are two of my best friends. I call them often to check up on them and to laugh about what’s new going on in my life or their’s. OH!! Pop’s finally finished the house. You would love it. There are so many rooms in it, you would get lost. It’s kinda his pride and joy, and Ma has a big kitchen too.

How are the kids? We’re doing great. You would be so proud of your grand babies. Carolyn is in college now. Yes ma’am. Hard to believe huh? The last time you saw her she was just a tiny little thing. Now she is a tall, skinny student studying for some sort of Arts degree. I think she wants to be a stage performer or even an actress. Haha yes ma’am she has pretty black skin too.

Caila just had a little boy. I’ve only met him once, but he seems like a good little man. He likes to eat, I can tell you that much. No ma’am, they aren’t married, but they are being very responsible parents. She’s also in school, and she is studying fashion. You know what Grandma? She makes a mean breakfast too. She would make you proud. When we see you, ask her to make you some pancakes. Trust me…mighty tasty.

David hahaha ole Dave. Why am I laughing? Well, because David just got married. I believe that he’s ready. He and his wife compliment each other well. He wants to be an animator. No ma’am. Not like The Lion King or Aladdin. The movies he will be making are just a tad bit different. I’ll have to show you in order for you to truly understand what he does. Oh, of course….next time.

Yes ma’am. Your babies are getting very big. Wait… you have some tissue? Oh, that’s right. Look and see if you have your handkerchief. You do? Ok…good. Alright, I’ll keep going.

Ok, who’s next. Krysta. Remember when she was a baby, and how small she was? Well Grandma, Kwitta ain’t small no more. Oh Grandma, such a beauty. That girl has a million dollar smile, and she’s sooooo silly! I laugh even when I think about her. When you see her, you will want to grab her, hug her, and not want to let go. Yes ma’am, that tiny little gal is a beautiful young woman now.

How is Kenny? Oh, he is doing well. He and his girlfriend have a son. Well, Grandma Kenny is an old soul. He ain’t gonna let anyone force him to rush into anything. Hahahaha! Yes ma’am, he’s just like Granddaddy. Especially when he would come to church. Last one there, and the first one to leave. He’s a great musician too.

Alisha is doing great. I talk to her from time to time. She sends me text messages and pictures all the time about the things her boys do. Oh, that’s right. Well, I’ll explain texting to you later. It’s pretty cool, but I’m sure you’re just fine using your old rotary phone. Anyway, Lee is truly a black beauty. She got married a few years ago. She and her husband are raising two fantastic boys. Baby geniuses.

Yes ma’am. Joyce still looks like Aunt Connie. They are actually in the same field. Joyce is a great teacher. You would be so proud of the job she is doing. I went to see her in action the one day….and Grandma. That gal is truly talented.

I must say that Sam has made the most strides of us all from when he was a kid to now. He was actually the first of us to get married. Stop smiling so hard Grandma. Yes ma’am. Your boy has a beautiful wife and two amazing kids. He just started his own business, and hopes to be independent one day. When you get a chance…give him a call. He would be really happy to hear your voice.

As for me, I moved out of Chester a few years ago to live in California. I got married about a year and a half ago. Her name is Bri. You would love her. She makes me laugh all the time. What do I do? Well, I work full time, and I counsel kids part time. I enjoy it. I really like writing though. It helps me express myself. Yes ma’am. I’ll keep doing it. I promise not to stop.

Grandma? You remember when we used to have to give you some sugar on your cheek every time we saw you? I miss that. Remember how you used to hug us and rub our backs when we had a bad day?…..oh, what about when you made us the best sweet potato pies ever? They were the best. I don’t really eat them much anymore. No ma’am. Not since you stopped making them.

Well, Grandma. I won’t hold you up. I know you have a lot of work to do helping out God and all his angels. So, I just wanted to call and say:

Happy Mother’s Day!

Grandma? Do you remember how Ma and all your girls would sing this song every Christmas?

(Heaven Is My Home)

I am a stranger here.

Heaven is my home.

Earth is just a desert sphere.

Heaven is my home.

After I have done my best.

Heaven is my home.

Then I’ll go and take my rest.

Heaven is my home.

Danger and sorrows stand around me on every hand.

Now I have a new home in my Father’s land.

Heaven is my home.
